A history born of courage

From a collective of survivors to a registered association, one single thread: to give the words of exiled people the place they deserve.

Our story

A struggle born in the jails of the desert

Born out of the Collective of Victims of Torture in Libya, the association Le Prix des Promesses d'Exil continues a struggle begun by survivors of the migration routes and of the Libyan detention camps. Out of suffering came a resolve: to testify, to inform and to act so that these realities are neither ignored nor forgotten.

Registered as a French non-profit association and based in Pacé, it brings together survivors, researchers, lawyers, artists and committed citizens around a single demand: to make heard the voices too often silenced, to defend the dignity of people in exile and to contribute to the search for truth and justice.

Through testimony, awareness-raising, culture and advocacy, Le Prix des Promesses d'Exil works for a better understanding of migration journeys and of the human-rights violations that mark them. Convinced that information is a tool of protection, the association works so that everyone can have access to authentic accounts, grounded in lived experience and in the reality of the ground.

True to its slogan, the association holds a simple conviction: information protects, while smugglers thrive on ignorance. By giving a voice to those who have lived through exile, it helps to inform choices, to dismantle false promises and to strengthen prevention against the dangers of the migration routes.

History

Key moments

A history born of the routes of exile and of voices that refuse silence. It begins with accounts that many would rather not hear: survivors of the Libyan detention camps, who found refuge in France, Germany and Switzerland, carry within them the marks of violence, arbitrary detention and a journey of extreme brutality. Silenced for a long time, in November 2021 they decided to come together.

  1. Making forgotten voices heard

    November 2021

Founding of the Collective of Victims of Torture in Libya

It was out of this will to break the silence that the Collective of Victims of Torture in Libya was born. More than a structure, it was first of all a space of speech and of recognition — a place where testimonies become a collective force, and where individual experience turns into shared commitment.

  2. Giving a framework to these words

    2021

Becoming a registered association in Bagneux

The movement took shape and was formally constituted as a French non-profit association, declared in Bagneux. This step marked the passage from an initiative of survivors to an organisation able to carry lasting work: gathering accounts, documenting them, passing them on, and beginning a dialogue with civil society and with institutions.

  3. Widening the horizon

    Evolution of the project

Birth of Le Prix des Promesses d'Exil

Over time the project evolved: the Collective of Victims of Torture in Libya became Le Prix des Promesses d'Exil. The change of name erases nothing, it widens. It makes room for other accounts, other routes, other exiles. The ambition became broader and more universal: to show the reality of migration journeys in all their complexity, beyond borders and individual situations, through the power of testimony.

  4. Organising in order to act

    June 2026

    A new phase of development

The association is entering a phase of consolidation. It is strengthening its internal organisation and undertaking a thorough reflection on its direction and its short-, medium- and long-term objectives. This phase aims to root the project durably, to structure its work and to amplify its impact: to inform better, to raise awareness better, and to keep carrying the words of those whom the routes of exile have made invisible.

  5. Today

Le Prix des Promesses d'Exil pursues a simple and essential mission: to bring into existence accounts that are too often ignored. To gather, document and pass on the words of the people concerned by migration journeys. And to recall, tirelessly, that no decision to leave should ever be taken in ignorance.

Governance

An independent and committed board

The board of Le Prix des Promesses d'Exil is made up of four members with complementary paths, combining lived experience of the migration routes, entrepreneurship and civic commitment. United by shared values of solidarity, justice and respect for human dignity, they ensure the sound governance of the association and the fidelity of its work to its mission.

This complementarity makes it possible to combine lived experience, professional skills and civic commitment, in order to bring a balanced and independent view to the association's direction.

Le Prix des Promesses d'Exil is a strictly non-political and non-religious association. Its independence is one of its founding principles: it receives no funding from political parties, partisan movements or religious organisations. That independence guarantees the association's freedom to act and to speak, in the sole service of information, awareness and the defence of human rights.
