The association

Who we are

What is Le Prix des Promesses d'Exil?

Le Prix des Promesses d'Exil is a French non-profit association (loi 1901) based in Pacé, in Ille-et-Vilaine, which defends victims of torture and violence along the migration routes. It grew out of the Collective of Victims of Torture in Libya, formed in November 2021 by survivors of the Libyan detention camps who had found refuge in France, Germany and Switzerland. It now brings together survivors, researchers, lawyers, artists and committed citizens around a single mission: to gather, document and pass on the words of those whom the routes of exile have made invisible.

What does the name “Le Prix des Promesses d'Exil” mean?

The name — literally “the price of the promises of exile” — refers to the human price paid by those who believed the promises of exile. It succeeded the name Collective of Victims of Torture in Libya: the change does not erase the Libyan origin of the struggle, it widens it to other routes, other accounts and other exiles. It carries the association's founding conviction: information protects, while smugglers thrive on ignorance.

What are the association's four missions?

The association's work rests on four pillars. Document & denounce: field investigations, gathering survivors' accounts and publishing reports on human-rights violations along the migration routes. Support: legal guidance, referral to health professionals, psychological support and social support for survivors who have reached France. Legal action: support for complaints and proceedings brought against traffickers, torturers and the networks involved. Awareness & prevention: public talks, teaching materials, documentary films and multilingual campaigns.

Where does the association work?

The association's registered office is at 11B chemin Jean François, Le Gonidec, 35740 Pacé, in Brittany, and its public events are held mainly in Pacé and Rennes. It is also from France that it supports survivors in their legal, medical and social procedures. Its documentation work covers the migration routes, from the Sahara to the Libyan coast, and its prevention campaigns are also addressed to countries of transit and of origin.

How is the association funded, and is it independent?

The association lives on the commitment of its supporters: one-off or recurring donations, memberships and private support. It is strictly non-political and non-religious, and receives no funding from political parties, partisan movements or religious organisations. That independence is one of its founding principles: it guarantees its freedom to act and to speak. Its statutes and internal rules can be consulted freely on this site.

How do I become a member, and what does membership cost?

Membership is taken out online from the “Take action & support” page. Four options are offered. Active member, free of charge: you take part in the association's work and may be elected to its board, as provided by the statutes. Full member, €25 a year: you support the association and contribute to its work. Benefactor member, from €30 a year, amount of your choosing: you provide financial support for the development of its projects. Honorary member, free of charge: this option recognises people for services rendered to the association and for their contribution to its development. The free options are confirmed immediately, with no payment at all; for the paid options you pay through PayPal, or by bank card via PayPal without needing a PayPal account — your card details never pass through the association. Your membership number is emailed to you as soon as your membership is confirmed.

How do I donate, and what is the tax deduction?

Donations are made online from the “Take action & support” page, as a one-off, monthly or yearly gift, through secure PayPal payment. 66% of your donation is deductible from French income tax, up to 20% of taxable income: a €100 donation therefore costs you only €34. A tax receipt is issued.

How do I volunteer?

Write to contact@leprixdespromessesdexil.fr or use the contact form on the “The association” page, saying when you are available and what you would like to do. Many skills are useful: welcoming people, translation, communications, administrative help, support for workshops and events. You can also come and meet us at one of our public events.

Testifying

Words, and how they are protected

How can I share my testimony, and what guarantees of confidentiality do you offer?

Whether you are a survivor, a relative or a witness, you can write to contact@leprixdespromessesdexil.fr: nothing is asked of you beyond what you wish to confide. Each account then follows the association's dignity protocol: documented consent, freely revocable at any time; anonymisation of places, dates and identifying details whenever the safety of the person or of their relatives requires it; and gathering always overseen by professionals trained in listening to survivors of torture.

What place does culture hold in your work?

For the association, culture is a space of repair and of transmission. It supports documentary films and works of fiction, runs writing workshops in Pacé and Rennes for survivors and their relatives, offers training for social workers, lawyers and health professionals, and awards the Prix des Promesses d'Exil each year.
